Education is a big part of our job as SEO Consultants. At dmTO Online Marketing we feel an educated client is a satisfied client. In keeping with this we are introducing a series of blog posts covering the basics of SEO. Up first the title tag.

The Search Engine On Page Best Practice around title tags suggests:

Each page should have a unique title tag containing the relevant keyword phrase for that particular page only. Page titles should start with your targeted keywords and title tags should be no longer than 70 characters. Our suggested syntax for a title meta tag is:

Keyword Phrase | Company Name

The title tag is one of the most important ranking factors in the search engines ranking algorithms, so placing your most important keywords in this tag will increase the search engine rankings for the page.

Place the most important keywords or keyword phrases at the beginning of the tag and keep your title short, no longer than 70 characters including spaces. Try to avoid as much as possible the use of stop words, such as a, an, of, on, etc., as they eat up your character count and in the end offer no value.

Avoid including in your title any irrelevant words not found on the page, as this will weaken the impact of your targeted keywords.

The question is for large dynamic websites such as ecommerce websites, the title tags sometime tend to go longer than 70. Is it worth the effort to fix them? Remember dynamic websites can be a paid at time.
