Internal Link Building

Internal link building is an essential part of any SEO program as it effects how search engines crawl a web site.

directoryIt can also be a major factor as to whether or not your site is user friendly.  A badly planned internal link building strategy will create frustration and confusion down the road for yourself.  There are three good reasons to have a well planned strategy in place.  Which works best for all three – a pyramid shape or a simple flat shape?

Pyramid shapes are easier to manage, however’ there is always the chance of the search engine bots only crawling for several layers before calling it a day and moving on.  If you use a pyramid-shaped link building strategy and you notice that some deep pages are not being indexed – this could be the reason – they are too deep.

Link building using a flat system can be much harder to manage and you will end up with more links on a page than you may want.  With a flat structure, you are likely to have more pages indexed since they are all at a top level.

So, which is best? It all depends on your site.  The flatter the structure, the better. Having said that though, small pyramid shapes  no more than three levels can provide the best of both worlds.  These internal linking structures are easy to crawl by a search engine, easy to use by visitors to your site – the deepest page is no more than two or three clicks away, and more importantly easy for you to manage.
