If you ever read that statement on any SEO site, keep clicking to the next site. First off no professional would ever make those claims. But for the unscrupulous ones, it is their clarion call. The problem is they can get you a number one ranking … for your company name. Unless you have a really common business name you should always rank #1 for your own company name.
Ranking number one for a company name is a no brainer; searchers already know your company name. It’s discovering the keyword phrases searchers are using to look for your site and making sure your site is search engine friendly that separates the professionals from the amateurs.
If they claim “Using SEO, we can make your website rank #1 in Google”
The question to ask is, “Rank #1 for what keyword?”
Sure, SEO (search engine optimization) does work, but the companies who promise #1 rankings don’t give you the full story. It’s very easy to rank #1 for some nonsense phrase like “gobbeldy-gook” but what good does that do you?
And you can almost always rank #1 for your own name-unless it’s something very common like “John Smith”-but how does that help if you want to attract visitors who DON’T already know who you are?
SEO isn’t about ranking #1 for a random phrase or your own name. It’s about ranking highly (in the first page at least) for multiple keywords and key word phrases that relate to your website.
Finally ranking #1 for search terms no one is using are also useless. Our sister site Videozine.ca has ranked #1 for VHS to DVD Transfers in Toronto for the last 4 years, but it has been almost a year since we transferred a VHS tape to DVD!
