SEO Best Practice - Title Tag
SEO Best Practices suggests the title tag start with relevant, targeted keywords. Relevant, targeted keywords first; then your company name. Keep the tag to around 70 characters.
Here is an example Title tag which should appear in-between the <HEAD> tags of your web page(s):
<title>
Moving and Storage Containers - 1-888-428-2348 - Cubeit Portable Storage
</title>
The title tag is very important. Why? Because search engines not only give it value in relation to optimization, SE’s use it in their search results. Search on ANY search engine, and you’ll see the content of this tag used in the anchor text of the links for each web site.
There are 90 MILLION + pages in Google with the title tag <title>Untitled</title> So most of the web page links displayed are Untitled. Why? Because who ever built these web pages used an editing program that adds the title tag, and they never changed the title text.
So what should be in the title tag? The “keyword phrase” you are targeting that particular page for and the name of your business or web site.
Here is a good title tag using this example:
<title>VHS to DVD Transfers in Toronto 416-456-6359</title>
Keep it short and to the point. Remember this is what will appear in the search results, so including your phone number is a bonus.
The title tag sets up the rest of the page, so remember to make it relevant.
